DER BAU / VERONIKA ROMHANY aka NIMOVA PROJECKT AND FAUSTO MERCIER

03.01. 2019 and 10.01.2019

two channel video projection with live audio performance

The two channel video projection with sound aimed to re-create a paranoid, claustrophobic atmosphere based on the text. The monologue of the restless protagonist creature shares its existential fear, its greed and persecution mania with us and it’s placed into an unhuman/posthuman artificial scene by the interpretation. One channel of the installation is a loop – tied hams swinging like a metronome from left to right and back endlessly –

While the other channel creates a tabloid by using a motion capture online data bank to connect emotions with physical movements.

/a state of mind in an infinite loop/

„…Kafka uses writing to revolt against oppression but is unable to break out, because he would lose the his mental state of a suffering of a caged animal, his main source of inspiration.

This inability casues permanent guilt, however, here guilt is a tool not a consequence: his writing is born from the permanent tension between the inability to break out and the desire and hope to be free”

The indirect aim of the project was to explore a peculiar, alienated and anxious or even paranoid mental state through working with Kafka’s text. The starting point the usual mantra: individual vs. social condition; assimilation; assertive reactional behaviour. The very symbol of this is meat, raw and shapeless, as gravity and other laws of physics force it to mould into the net which supports it and binds it at the same time. There is no alternative, it’s inevitable. Decontextualised, deterritorialised – a kind of abstraction the anxiety of a slowly and fully alienated human being fragments of the text as a permanent monologue, madness, loss of direction.
